Signage company cuts energy bills by £4.9k pa
Manchester-based signage and printing firm, Astra Signs, is benefiting from cost savings of £4,900 a year, with scope for another £7,800 of annual savings, following an on-site review.
Established in 1984, Astra Signs makes signs for national and international clients, across all sectors including the retail, leisure, events, property and construction industries.
The business has been working closely with an ENWORKS adviser from local environmental charity, Groundwork Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. A number of opportunities for resource efficiency improvements have been identified, bringing significant cost and environmental savings.
Following an energy monitoring exercise with data logging equipment, a mid-week equipment shutdown procedure was implemented, which has reduced electricity bills by more than £1,700 a year.
A further £3,000 has been saved from annual energy bills after 12 air leaks were identified and repaired in the site’s compressed air system. An ongoing maintenance programme has also been put in place to improve the monitoring of any air leaks in the future.
The combined energy savings have resulted in a reduction of 25 tonnes a year in overall CO2 emissions from the premises.
Groundwork is continuing to work with Astra Signs to increase awareness of environmental issues amongst staff. Further measures for improving environmental performance have also been identified, including reviewing waste management, providing fuel efficiency training for company drivers and improving vehicle maintenance to reduce fuel consumption.
The additional fuel savings alone are predicted to save the business £7,800 a year in diesel costs and reduce CO2 emissions by another 19 tonnes annually.
Andy Farnworth, health and safety officer at Astra Signs, said: "Through our association with Groundwork MSSTT and the ENWORKS programme we were able to realise savings in areas we have not previously identified."
Astra Signs is a member of Groundwork MSSTT’s resource efficiency club, which provides free, ongoing support and information on a range of environmental issues, tailored to the individual needs of SMEs.
As part of the service, members of staff have attended a free waste management workshop and had the chance to network with other local businesses and learn from their experiences.
Groundwork MSSTT is a key member of the North West’s ENWORKS service, offering free support to help SMEs cut costs and boost their profits through improved environmental performance.
