Business leaders back smart meters

A survey of decision makers at leading companies shows that the nearly nine in ten believe the rollout of smart meters is good for business.

Energy suppliers are offering smart meters to small businesses as part of a government-led rollout to provide accurate bills and put users in control of their energy use.

The aim is for every home and small business to have a smart meter by the end of 2020, but the programme has suffered several delays. 

According to the government, the national rollout will enable smarter electricity grids, help to better manage the supply and demand of energy, and underpin greater integration with smart technology

Industry view

In a survey of more than 500 decision makers in large UK companies, commissioned by Smart Energy GB, 86 per cent believed that the smart meter rollout was important for the economy, with 68 per cent considering additional smart technology in their business strategies. 

21 per cent reported that the cost of energy had “increased significantly” in the recent months. 

Small businesses with fewer than ten employees could be eligible for a smart meter at no extra cost, but companies of all sizes are being encouraged to speak to their energy supplier for an upgrade.

Many larger businesses have benefitted from half-hourly smart metering since 1998.

Sacha Deshmukh, chief executive of Smart Energy GB, said: “This research shows that business leaders across the country recognise the huge opportunities for innovation that are being created by the smart meter rollout and the transformation it brings to our energy system. There’s an incredible opportunity for businesses large and small.

“A flexible, digital energy system, with smart meters at its heart, is vital for Britain’s future economic success.”

The government is currently consulting with industry on how to build a smarter, more flexible energy system as part of its forthcoming industrial strategy.
